How To Understand Bafflegab

Since the time when I entered the field of financial reporting and analysis as a teenager, I1 have had one crusade above all others — to try to translate into language I could understand, and thus you could understand, the pompous phrases, the tortuously complicated technical jargon of the professional economists and syllable-worshiping experts.

I've tried to do this by a simple process. First, I ask myself what the expert is saying. Then I explain what he is saying to myself in words which make sense to me. Then I challenge myself to write what he is saying in the words I would use at, for instance, a social dinner party this evening.

As you've already noted, I tried to pierce some of Wall Street's bafflegab—and especially the bafflegab of Government finance and the United States Government market—in Chapter Two, "Hints on Investing"

In the pages that follow, you’ll read a few of my attempts to tear into the bafflegab of various areas in industry and in Washington. If, as you read, any of the bafflegab comes clear to you, you will be in a better position to get your money's worth.
